STORM DEBRIS CLEANUP DATA – 06/06/24

The City understands the frustration with the work and cost of cleaning up after the May 28 storm.

Subsidizing 50% of the storm bulky brush pickup cost was a quick action to help citizens, but we know the cost is still an unexpected impact to every household. Here are a few facts regarding the emergency situation:

  • The sum earmarked for this subsidy is significant, due to the large lots with many beautiful mature trees that were damaged or lost.
  • According to Waste Connections, the citywide cleanup will cost a contracted rate of $236.50 per hour. This does not include the pass-through fee for landfill delivery.
  • Staff estimates the total cost could reach $35,000 or more.
  • These funds will come from the Solid Waste fund balance, which through conservative practices, has the capacity to provide some emergency relief.

Questions also have been asked about fund recovery via the Rockwall County Disaster Declaration. The main purpose of such a declaration is to accelerate the ability to request emergency assistance from the State, such as calling in The Reserves, and bypassing standard (but lengthy) purchasing procedures to quickly obtain things such as fuel, generators, food for workers – and then later try to recover some of those expenses from the State.

We hope this helps clarify the situation a little, though it may not be the perfect answer for you! If you have additional questions, please call the City at 972-771-6228.
