Texas Native and Adapted Plants

A plant is considered native if it has occurred naturally in a particular region, ecosystem, or habitat without human introduction. Adapted plants are not native and not invasive but are able to thrive in the local climate and soil conditions.

When looking at the brochures, be aware that Rockwall County is in growing zone 8B.

Gardening Information Specific to North Texas

The Rockwall County Master Gardeners support and assist Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service by providing the community with information on research-based gardening practices.

What really sets all Extension Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to educate others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities. Some Master Gardeners answer telephone requests for information related to gardening. Others assist with plant clinics or classes in the community.

Master Gardeners may speak to local groups and conduct workshops. They may help establish community garden projects, work with youth, or assist their agent with news releases and newsletters related to gardening. The Rockwall Master Gardeners have maintained demonstration gardens and have opened their own gardens for public tours. From Agriculture to Vermiculture  and beyond, the topics of interest are almost endless!
