The Texas Transportation Code regulates the operation of golf carts on public roadways, and the code is enforced by law enforcement agencies including the Heath Department of Public Safety.
If you have a golf cart, here’s what you need to know
- Golf Carts are defined as motor vehicles (502.001).
- Operators of motor vehicles must be licensed (521.001).
- Golf carts must have a “slow moving vehicle” sign attached (547.703).
- Golf carts must be equipped with headlamps, tail lamps, reflectors, parking brakes and mirrors (551.404).
- Golf carts do not have to be registered, but they can have a license plate. No registration or inspection stickers are required.
- Golf carts can be driven on a public roadway (551.403) IF:
- The posted speed limit is not more than 35 miles per hour;
- It’s during daylight hours; and
- The location is no more than two miles from where the golf cart is usually parked.
- The City of Heath has the ability to prohibit operation of golf carts on the public roadways beyond the restrictions of the code if it is deemed necessary in the interest of safety.
- This section of the transportation code does not regulate NEV’s (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles), four-wheelers, Gators and other utility vehicles.
